As a longtime fan of Old Time Radio I had heard of Norman Corwin but until 1995 had never heard anything by Norman Corwin. On May 8, 1995, on the fiftieth anniversary on V-E Day, radio station KNX Los Angeles rebroadcast Corwins masterpiece On A Note of Triumph. I was blown away by what I heard. I never imagined that radio drama could be lifted to such heights. It was radio art. It was and is American art.
On making The Poet Laureate of Radio: An Interview with Norman Corwin:
I was fortunate enough to meet author Ray Bradbury. I had with me a copy of The Martian Chronicles for him to autograph. As we spoke, I told him of my documentary film about the history of radio. I knew he and Norman Corwin were friends and hoped he could put me in contact with the legendary writer-producer-director. Well, not only were they friends, but much to my amazement the very book I held was dedicated to Norman Corwin. Ray explained that it was Norman who urged him to publish his Martian short stories as one book. It was a wonderful moment.
I conducted a two-hour interview with Norman Corwin in December of 2004 at Culver Studios, Culver City, CA. It was just one of many interviews for my film project Radio Changed America. I prepared like a madman! After the interview was concluded, Norman commended my interview skills and felt it was one of the best interviews hed ever had. He suggested that the entire interview be edited and released on its own. Thus was born The Poet Laureate of Radio: An Interview with Norman Corwin. Simple music bridges and title cards connect the Corwin clips for 76 minutes. Youd think that would get monotonous. Not with a gifted man like Norman Corwin. Its not just about his career; its about freedom and liberty and the perils of war as well as the obligation of an artist and even a section on the great William Shatner.
On the Importance of Corwin:
He is a man of both ideals and ideas. He has the ability to use soaring poetic language to celebrate the Common Man and the virtues of liberty and freedom. His work celebrating the 150th anniversary of The Bill of Rights was broadcast December 15, 1941, on all four networks just eight days after the attack on Pearl Harbor. It starred James Stewart, Lionel Barrymore, Edward G. Robinson and Orson Welles, among many other stars. 60 million people listened. His masterpiece, On A Note of Triumph was broadcast on V-E Day, May 8, 1945, and proved so impressive that CBS had a repeat broadcast delivered on May 13, 1945. This broadcast was released as a record and the script as a book. It was based on four questions to be asked that night: Who have we beaten? How much did it cost to beat him? What do we do now? Will it all happen again?
After the war, CBS phased him out. He was liberal and times had turned decidedly conservative with the real or imagined communist threat. Never a communist nor a socialist, Corwin was nevertheless listed in the booklet Red Channels. Guilty of being anti-American in some eyes, one of our greatest American was successfully marginalized from the public-at-large. That is what I intend to change.
